Great idea, Sara! My son’s school collected leftover candy this year and I believe they sent the spoils to U.S. soldiers. It was a nice way to half the pile of loot my boys received.

We have had a long standing tradition at our house where the great pumpkin comes (probably because his toth fairy sister is too busy), leaves a note for the kids about the sad state of his teeth from too much candy and not enough dental hygiene and exchanges the uneaten candy for a small gift–usually a book or CD or some kind of craft project. The candy excahnge came at the same time the carved pumpkins disappeared, under the guise of the great pumpkin collecting all the dead/finished jack-o-lanterns. So the kids had about a week to eat away at their stash, which they actually did very little of. As they got older, they’d take out a few favorite pieces and actually give me the bag (with a sheepish smile) to save for the great pumpkin exchange. Now the kids are all passed the trick or treat stage. Bummer.
