Ready-to-Eat

Sara beat me to the punch in addressing the cloning bill vetoed by Governor Arnold.  Good job!  Keep in mind this veto came from a Governor who is both health and environmentally conscious.

What concerns me the most is the lack of consistency among our Federal agencies in regulating “ready-to-eat” foods.  Recall the most recent E.coli outbreak resulting in the recall of frozen pizzas.  Apparently the USDA inspects plants where the frozen pepperoni pizza is made because of the meat topping, but the FDA is responsible for inspecting plants that make frozen cheese pizzas.

In February a familiar brand of peanut butter was linked to a salmonella outbreak.   Then there was another salmonella outbreak of chicken and turkey pot pies in October.  What is confusing is that peanut butter is regulated by the FDA, the pot pies are regulated by the USDA and the FDA issued the warning to consumers to avoid eating fresh bagged salad linked to the spinach E.coli outbreak.

It is no wonder this is all happening given the large amount of “ready to eat” foods that have surfaced in our supermarkets.  I am surprised any agency can keep up with these inspections but clearly there needs to be better coordination.  I would suspect there will be even more contaminations in the future.  So, what should we do – purchase and prepare your own food!
